Top tip: There are plenty of guided tours, however, I would strongly recommend renting a car. This gives you the opportunity to experience the sites at your own pace. Sometimes the stunning drives are just as jaw dropping as the sites you are going to visit. If you do decide to rent a car, make sure you take extremely detailed photos of the car to avoid additional charges when giving the car back. It is also important to have sufficient insurance (eg RAC international insurance) to cover you in case of any damage.
Top Tip: If you decide to rent a car, be prepared to skid! This happened to us a couple of times and I can not tell you how scary it is. Make sure you are confident and know what to do while skidding.
Top Tip: Try and pick accommodation which has oven/hob access. Cooking your own lunch and/or dinner will make your trip a lot cheaper.
Top Tip: During the summer accommodation sells out well in advance! So make sure you thoroughly plan your trip and book in advance. During the Winter months it is not as bad.
Top Tip: Eating out in Iceland is expensive and even more expensive the further into the wilderness you go! I would recommend taking flasks full of hot pasta to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
Top Tip: Weather conditions are always changing in Iceland. ALWAYS check the weather forecast using Icelandic Met Office website before leaving to go on an unguided trip to ensure it is safe to do so.
